As a therapist working with young people I was looking for ways of helping young people express themselves. After realising tools were limited I decided to create my own, years later we have produced a set of tactile, versatile emotions cards.
14 cards (including title card) are printed in full colour onto a weighty card with silky finish. The matte card was chosen for its great print quality and luxurious, thick feel. The cards are 70mm by 28mm fitting perfectly in the palm of your hand. Strung together using a detachable ball chain, they can be kept together or taken apart as necessary. Extremely tactile, they are often picked up and played with by clients even if they are not being ‘used’.
The emotions are depicted with a word and an emoticon, similar to those often used in social media so highly accessible for all ages. They have been used with those as young as 4 years to adults. Emotions include: happy, confident, safe, excited, shocked, confused, scared, alone, worried, sad, upset, mad and angry. The cards can be used in their entirety or a few picked out to suit.
They can be flipped through and discussed, taken apart and ranked, combined with written words, photos, art or even sand tray to suit client’s needs. Whether they are used as prompts in a simple starter activity or to explore something more complex these cards are a valuable tool.
The cards can be used in many settings; in therapy, education, special educational needs and many more, how will you use yours?
